HIV/AIDS has affected the lives of millions of Americans across the country since its rise and spread in the early 1980s. With very little knowledge of how the disease was transmitted and very little access to proper healthcare millions of Americans have succumbed to the disease. In recent decades medical advancements have provided patients with a greater range of treatment and prevention programs, however, access to these programs has varied based on gender, race and socioeconomic background. This in turn has detrimental effects on health status, employment, and overall quality of life. This research examines HIV/AIDS survivors’ access to health care along with the stigma associated with this disease. Through a content analysis of selected HIV/AIDS memoirs, published since 2000, the research shows how survivors of different backgrounds manage stigma associated with disease and how they navigate healthcare, shedding light on how medical inequalities translate into lived experience.
