Research on individuals who face some form of institutional labeling and exclusion during their middle and high school careers has shown that this exclusion may be detrimental in numerous ways to these individuals’ access to economic mobility and overall participation in the world around them. This paper focuses on how individuals relate to their lived experiences of exclusion while attending alternative schools in an attempt to shed light on the meanings these individuals ascribe to the labels applied to their identities by institutions early in life and how they view them now. Retrospective interviews with adults formally enrolled in alternative schools were analyzed using theories of symbolic interactionism and identity formation. Results from this study illustrate the meanings that individuals attach to past experiences of exclusion along with how they negotiate the adult world, employment and family, in light of past labels. Through allowing respondents to elucidate how they view the events of their life, this paper will attempt to create agency and further discussion around how marginalized identities are created.
